Tayyibah Taylor, 1952-2014

The Shalom Hartman Institute mourns the untimely passing of our beloved student and friend, Tayyibah Taylor. Tayyibah, founder and editor in chief of Azizah , America’s first magazine for Muslim-American women, and a leading figure in the Muslim-American community, was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. Tayyibah’s devotion to Muslim-Jewish reconciliation helped the Hartman Institute launch our Muslim Leadership Initiative , of which Tayyibah was an essential part.

Those of us who were privileged to know her were touched by her deep faith in God and in humanity’s capacity to transcend itself. Inspired by Tayyibah’s faith and courage, we rededicate ourselves to the sacred task of Muslim-Jewish reconciliation.

You care about Israel, peoplehood, and vibrant, ethical Jewish communities. We do too.
