Ruth CalderonDr. Calderon has MA and PhD degrees in Talmud from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 1989, after studying at the Hartman Institute, she established the first Israeli secular, pluralistic, and egalitarian Beth Midrash. In 1996, she founded ALMA, which seeks to acquaint secular Israelis with Hebrew culture. From 2013-2015, she was a Knesset Member from the Yesh Atid Party, where she was Deputy Speaker and Chair of the Lobby for Jewish Renewal.

Dr. Calderon said she is happy and grateful to be back at SHI, which she described as her "alma mater."

"The Shalom Hartman Institute was the first institution to give me a place at a Beit Midrash table," she said. "Since then it has come even farther and is today a leading voice in Jewish education and Jewish thought. I hope to add my share."
