Despite the weak dollar, and thus the increased expense of such a trip for participants, registration is high and this year’s group is large. From day one at the Institute, the rabbis’ program is jam-packed with activity and learning.
In addition to Institute lecturers, the rabbis will also participate in elective courses given by scholars Rabbi David Ellenson, Rabbi Einat Ramon and Dr. Aviva Zorenberg.

Highlights of this year’s program include a celebration of Israel at 60 with musician Shlomo Gronich, a choice of interactive excursions and walking tours, a movie night with screenwriter, journalist and Hartman fellow Stuart Schoffman, and an evening program with Danny Rothschild on Islamic Fundamentalism and the New Middle East.
This year, each day is dedicated to a specific topic. They range from: "Holocaust Narratives and Their Impact on Contemporary Jewish Identities," to "God Narratives in the Talmud," from "Maimonidean Narratives," to "Ways of Remembering Sinai." The overriding theme of memory and narratives run through all of these.
After these two weeks of intense experience and learning, about 90 of these rabbis will depart, while the 27 rabbis of the three-year Rabbinic Leadership Initiative program will stay for the remainder of their month-long residency.
