Source materials for Jewish study now on Hartman website

We have compile source materials from our many hundreds of files for you to use – for teachers looking for materials to back up their own classes, for rabbis looking for sermon ideas and the sources for them, for lay and community leaders studying on their own or in adult studies programs, and for individuals interested in doing their own research

Shalom Hartman Institute is a progressive, pluralistic research and educational institution that is home to Jewish scholars of all forms.

But one thing they all have in common – along with regular study sessions where they sit together – is their reliance on classic Jewish sources, and their interest in classic forms of Jewish learning, such as havruta, that is, paired, peer learning.

With that in mind, we have begun to compile source materials from our many hundreds of files for you to use – for teachers looking for materials to back up their own classes, for rabbis looking for sermon ideas and the sources for them, for lay and community leaders studying on their own or in adult studies programs, and for individuals interested in doing their own research.

The first four topics we have selected are:

Authority

Faith

Religious Certainty

Ethics

Each of the pages we have compiled include sources, most of which are widely available in English, as well as Hebrew, of course, and likely in your school or synagogue library if not online, as well as questions for directed and havruta study.

We hope these source documents become valuable tools for you in your personal or professional research. We encourage you to ask us for additional sources on these and other topics. Please feel free to suggest such topics to us by writing in the Comments section below, or by sending an email to us at [email protected] .

Enjoy the learning.

You care about Israel, peoplehood, and vibrant, ethical Jewish communities. We do too.
