Join Donniel Hartman , Yossi Klein Halevi , and Tehila Friedman on Tuesday, September 17, 2019, for a live program from the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem, as Israelis return to the election polls to try for a second time to build a ruling coalition of more than 60 seats in the Knesset that will be headed by a Prime Minister from the leading political party.

The Shalom Hartman Institute broadcast live from Jerusalem that evening will offer nuanced commentary and analysis of the campaign and the vote tallies. The program will begin at 21:30 Israel time (2:30 PM Eastern, 11:30 AM Pacific), 30 minutes before the polls close and will continue for at least one hour after they close and the first Exit Poll results are available. Hartman Institute President Donniel Hartman and Senior Fellow Yossi Klein Halevi will provide real-time results, commentary, and analysis. The program will be moderated by Institute Media Director Alan Abbey.

The unprecedented "re-vote" is being held because Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was unable to forge a majority coalition after the first vote in April. In the Israeli parliamentary system, no single political party has ever won an outright majority of the Knesset’s 120 seats. Therefore, the party with the most votes is usually tasked by the President with assembling a coalition of at least 61 members to govern the State.

After failing to gather enough political partners to form a government, Netanyahu and his Likud Party passed a bill dissolving the Knesset, which forced the second election round of voting.

In 2019, the key question was whether Israeli voters will return Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to his post, which he has held for 10 years. In the videos and articles below, Shalom Hartman Institute scholars and others address the issues facing Israel, the choices its politicians are making, and what these elections tell us about the state of Israeli society.

The Shalom Hartman Institute partnered with Times of Israel Watch a video of that program below. to host a live webinar program during the first election on April 9, 2019.
