More than 100 guests from all over Israel – academics, friends, and family – filled the new Shalom Hartman Institute to mark the inauguration of the Shemaryahu Talmon section of the Alvin Cramer Segal Library , December 29. The collection comprises 10,000 books primarily in the areas of Torah and Torah studies.

David Hartman gave an especially moving and personal talk, revealing how many years ago, Prof. Talmon, Israel Prize Laureate, then Dean of Humanities at Hebrew University, fought to bring Prof. Hartman onto the faculty despite the ideological opposition he faced.

Donniel Hartman , Co-Director of the Institute, and Avi Sagi , who acted as agent for the donation of the books, both addressed the crowd before Prof. Talmon’s keynote address.

Prof Talmon discussed the merging of motives from classical mythology and Christian art with the principles of Jewish interpretation in the Book of Jonah, making reference to his ex libris. Images from the Book of Jonah were also chosen as the symbol marking all the books in the Talmon collection.

The response of the crowd to the collection and its preservation and to the library in general, was overwhelmingly positive.
