Rabbi Dr. Rachel Sabath Beit-Halachmi s a Jewish institutional leader, author, and sought-after public speaker. Currently, Rachel serves Ohavay Zion Synagogue and is a senior scholar of the Kaplan Center for Jewish Peoplehood. Most recently she served as Assistant Professor of Jewish Thought and Ethics at Hebrew Union College (HUC) and led a four-campus team to achieve strategic goals. Prior to her national role at HUC, Rachel served as Vice President of the Shalom Hartman
The 29th annual Shalom Hartman Institute Lay Leadership Summer Retreat, set for July 1-8, 2009, will be on the theme, “Crisis and Uncertainty: Paradigms of Resilience & Meaning.”
Given that we are living in a time of unprecedented economic upheaval and uncertainty, our summer program will respond to the reality in which we live. We will study the core values of our tradition regarding wealth, human need, and ultimate values. We will also probe how Jewish visionaries of the past have responded to moments of crisis and what their responses and texts teach us about the origins of Jewish optimism. Our paradigmatic texts will include the Bible, the Talmud, the Zohar, post-Holocaust theology, and modern Zionist literature.
The study sessions will be led by the faculty of the Shalom Hartman Institute, including David Hartman, Donniel Hartman, Alfredo Borodowski, Melila Hellner-Eshed, Rachel Sabath Beit-Halachmi, and Noam Zion, as well as visiting scholars including David Ellenson.
The Lay Leadership Summer Retreat is a weeklong study seminar that takes place each year on the beautiful Hartman Institute campus in the heart of Jerusalem. The retreat brings together leaders of all denominations from across North America to address critical contemporary challenges facing Judaism and the State of Israel.
