March 1, 2009, is the final day for special Early Bird discounts for two popular summer 2009 programs at Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem.

Rabbis looking to attend the Rabbinic Torah Study Seminar from July 6-16, and Jewish community leaders and professionals looking to attend the Lay Leaders Summer Retreat from July 1-8 must complete and pay for their registrations today to receive the special discount prices.

The rabbinic program, Crisis and Uncertainty: Paradigms of Resilience, has been developed with special attention to the unprecedented economic, political, and social changes taking place.

"We are well aware that the ground is shifting underneath us and we are asking the great scholars of the Hartman think tank to respond", said Rabbi bill Berk, director of the Institute’s Center for Rabbinic Enrichment. We want to know what wisdom our tradition offers for how one might respond to crisis and uncertainty.
In the Summer 2009 Rabbinic Torah Study Seminar, we will identify and explore Judaism’s core paradigms that emerge in response to change and loss of meaning and how those responses are expressed, interact, and often critique each other."

The 29th annual Lay Leadership Summer Retreat will be on the same theme as the rabbinic program.

"Our summer program will respond to the reality in which we live," said Rabbi Rachel Sabath Beit-Halachmi, director of the Institute’s Center for Lay Leadership Education. "We will study the core values of our tradition regarding wealth, human need, and ultimate values. We will also probe how Jewish visionaries of the past have responded to moments of crisis and what their responses and texts teach us about the origins of Jewish optimism."
