Morton Mandel was lauded as a man with a "true love of learning and ideas" and a great leader at the dedication of the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Beit Midrash at Shalom Hartman Institute, Feburuary 26, 2009.

Donniel Hartman said during the dedication that for Mandel, "There is in your world a true love of learning and ideas."

Donniel, who called Mandel "David Hartman’s youngest student," because of his vitality and energy, pointed out that the donation of a Beit Midrash is so much more than simply a plaque. Indeed the Beit Midrash, used every day by students, soldiers and fellows, is a symbol of Mandel’s relationship with the Hartman Institute.

David Hartman , who has studied Jewish texts and philosophy with Mandel for decades, described his youthful enthusiasm and excitement about new ideas, and his ability to solve problems as a business and Jewish community leader.

After David Hartman spoke warmly of Mandel, Mandel replied, calling David Harman "the toughest teacher" he has ever had.

Mandel said that "in many ways the honor is mine. If you feel good about the Mandel name on this beit midrash, I feel good it is in the Hartman Institute."

The beit midrash study room is adjacent to the Institute library.
