Remembrance Day for the Fallen of Israel’s Wars, the official name for Memorial Day in Israel, was noted at Shalom Hartman Institute during a one-hour program on the morning of April 28 filled with stories of the fallen soldiers, discussions of what they contributed, and moving song and music.

Speakers included school administrators, former students, current soldiers, and current students. What made the event so poignant is that many of the high school students attending the ceremonies, as well as visitors from other schools, will join Israel’s armed forces after their graduation from Shalom Hartman Institute’s Boys High School. A high percentage of Hartman graduates join combat units either immediately after graduation or after a year in army preparatory programs. Many Hartman graduates have joined elite combat, intelligence and technological units, as well.

The accompanying video attempts to give the flavor of the event.
