Summertime is in full swing at Shalom Hartman Institute. Nearly 80 Jewish community leaders from across North America arrived at the Institute on July 1, 2009, for a week of lectures, seminars, tours and special events in the Lay Leadership Study Seminar.

The group opened its program with an opening reception highlighted by a special appearance from Israeli Education Minister Gidon Sa’ar, who spoke of the reforms under way in the Israeli school system. (See the brief video above for a look at the Lay Leadership Summer Retreat group’s arrival and welcome.)

The first two days were filled with lectures on the theme of "Crisis and Uncertainty," the week’s study theme. Rabbi Dr. Donniel Hartman’s lecture, titled, the "ABC’s of Jewish Ethics, discussed the principles of Jewish ethics, led off by Hillel the Sage’s famous comment to the prospective convert: Don’t do to others what is hateful to you.

"When religion controls the ethical, you destroy the ethical," Donniel Hartman said. "When the ethical is held as a secret knowledge of the religious, there is no ethical, but when the common folk know the ethical, there is an ethical world."

Rabbi Prof. David Hartman followed on Friday, July 3, 2009, with a masterful lecture on Shabbat as a "transcending moment" that allows those who observe it rightly to step away from the cares and anxieties of the week and to enter into a different realm.

On Sunday, July 5, after additional learning on Shabbat and communal meals, the group divided into several sub-groups for tours, including an inside look at the security system that protects the Old City of Jerusalem, ancient Jerusalem archeology, and a look at high-tech Israeli start-ups.
