Haifa has long been known in the local psyche as the symbol of a non-religious Israeli city. In response to the lack of commitment of local youth to the city of Haifa and the State of Israel, the Haifa municipality launched a new citywide initiative for the renewal of Jewish-Israeli identity. The municipality began this effort by mapping out the Jewish-Israeli identity programs most fitting to bring this new direction to Haifa.

• A Be’eri municipal facilitator works in close partnership with the Haifa municipality to integrate Jewish-Israeli identity content into all facets of formal and informal education.
• Eleven high schools are participating in the Be’eri program during the 2010-11 school year.
• For the second year running, the Haifa municipality will fund part of the Haifa-Be’eri initiative and will add approximately 60 weekly classroom hours in the schools.
• A large number of Haifa-based principals and teachers have begun training in the Be’eri School for Teacher Education.
