Engaging Israel Launched in Northern New Jersey

The program is funded generously by the Adler Family Innovation Fund at the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey

February 9, 2012, marked the official launch of the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America (SHI-NA) Engaging Israel  program in Northern New Jersey, funded generously by the Adler Family Innovation Fund at the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey .

A diverse group of community leaders – rabbis, lay leaders, Jewish community professionals, educators, and scholars – came together for an “Evening of Ideas” with Professor Moshe Halbertal , a faculty member of the Lev Aharon program for senior Israel Defense Force Officers, whose talk focused on Morality on the Battlefield. Participants gained insight and fresh perspectives on this particularly challenging subject.

Over the next 18 months, SHI-NA will be providing opportunities for Northern New Jersey leaders to engage more deeply in developing a values-based relationship between the North American Jewish community and Israel. Rabbis will be offered special seminars and incentives to use the Engaging Israel DVD series in their congregations; community lay leaders will be invited to in-person study sessions with Hartman visiting scholars in the fall.

Community-wide events like the recent Evening of Ideas will bring together leaders from across the community to address some of the most significant challenges facing the Jewish people today.
