It will focus on engagement between traditional Jewish sources and contemporary questions of Jewish existence

The Shalom Hartman Institute announces that it has begun recruiting for its 2012-13 Beit Midrash program. The Beit Midrash will focus on direct engagement between traditional Jewish sources and contemporary questions of Jewish existence, empowering a new generation of students to take ownership of Jewish culture and practice.

Targeted at students at the start of their graduate careers in Israel and abroad, this two-year program will offer fellows with a fertile and pluralistic environment for developing new voices and leadership within Judaism.

The SHI Beit Midrash, led by Senior Shalom Hartman Institute Research Fellows Dr. Melila Hellner-Eshed and Prof. Menachem Lorberbaum , will meet every Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning (a total of 10 hours per week) throughout the academic year. It will comprise a combination of havruta study and frontal seminars on Talmud and Jewish theology.

The Beit Midrash will inspire the next generation of intellectual and Judaic leaders to create a new contemporary Jewish thought that brings the relevancy, meaning, and language of Torah to the modern world. Excellence in study and critical commitment are what the Beit Midrash program expects of its students of all genders, affiliations, and denominations.
